We all want to be happier. However, many of us make it hard for ourselves to get there. It shouldn’t have to be hard. The opportunity to be happy is always there around us, we just fail to see it. There are things that you can do every day that can make you a happy person.
1. Do something nice for yourself
Every day, take some time to do something nice for yourself. Keep it simple and easy. It could be anything from a face mask or a game of badminton. Do one thing that makes you feel good.
2. Practice gratitude
How often do you notice the things you have? We tend to fuss over and complain about things which we don’t have, rather than being thankful for what we have. That is why practising gratitude is very important. It helps us count our blessings and feel happier.
3. Track your progress
If you think achieving your goal is more fun than anything else, then you have not experienced the joy of progress. That is mostly because most of us do not bother to track progress. Tracking progress has two benefits. One is that you regularly are reminded of how far you have come and will be more reluctant to give up. Second, it gives you a sense of achievement every time you take a step forward. So, whatever your goals are, get into a habit of tracking progress.
4. Talk more positively
We are what we talk. What we speak has the power to alter our reality. If you want to be happier, it is only possible if you make a conscious effort to talk positively. Do not use negative words to describe you or your situation. It will only make it seem worse than it already is. Instead, use positive words and you will feel the difference in just a few days.
5. Help others
Lending your hands to others can make you happy. It could be helping your mother on a simple chore, helping your friend out or taking part in a charity. All these activities have been proven to release dopamine (happy hormones). It increases your sense of belonging in the community and makes others happy too!
6. Have your ‘me’ time
All of us have somethings that we love doing but cannot do it when others are around. You have to take some ‘me’ time every day to get to those things. ‘Me’ time is also required for some introspection. For one to grow as a person introspection is absolutely necessary.
7. Keep things interesting
Our everyday life can get monotonous and boring. So, if we want to be happy, we have to spice things up. Change up your routine every now and then or do more of what makes you happy. Add things to your schedule that you look forward to so that it gives you the motivation to finish the boring stuff.
8. Notice the small things
In the rush of our lives, we tend to overlook many small things in life. But that is actually where happiness is hiding in plain sight like an innocent kid’s laughter, the beautiful colours of the sky at sunrise and sunset, a delicious home-cooked meal, etc. If you are mindful and can savour these small things, no one can take away your happiness.
9. Hang out with happy people
Being happy when you are surrounded by miserable people is a task that takes a lot of energy and effort. On the other hand, hanging out with happy people makes it much easier. Our moods tend to change according to our surroundings and people in it play a very important role. So, choose wisely.
10. Listen to upbeat music or watch a feel-good movie.
This is my go-to solution if I am feeling low. Upbeat music is refreshing and instantly pumps up your energy. Feel-good movies are great distractions for a bad day. Both have been scientifically proven to improve a person’s mood.
11. Decide to be happy
You have to consciously make a decision to be happy. Happiness is a choice that we make. Whenever I describe myself, I open with ‘I am a happy person’. I followed ‘fake it until you make it’ principle for this and it worked. Until you choose to be happy, you will never find happiness.
Happiness should be a part of who you are. It is not something to postpone or save for the future. Have a positive attitude and smile as often as you can. You will feel your life change for the better.
